"We are searching for a staff fire protection or senior fire protection engineer for a leading design/build firm. As an employee owned firm they focus on engineering, architectural, construction and environmental services across the country. www.burnsmcd.com. Burns and McDonnell is a 5,000 employee owned firm and considered a top employer in the country. They are growing the New York office due to a large portion of a local airport redevelopment program. The NYC office has a need for a Fire Protection Engineer. Successful candidates will join a growing office that works on a wide range of exciting and challenging projects including airports, aircraft storage and maintenance hangars, central utility plants, manufacturing and food processing plants, industrial and petroleum processing sites, state-of-the-art information technology facilities, aircraft manufacturing plants, educational and cultural facilities and more. Successful candidates will:

Design and specify fire suppression systems including wet-pipe, dry-pipe, preaction, deluge, fire pumps, and storage tanks on a wide variety of project types. Knowledge of special systems such as foam, spray, mist, clean agent, wet/dry chemical, and carbon dioxide is preferred.
Design and specify fire alarm systems, mass notification systems, and releasing systems. Knowledge of manual, electric, and pneumatic releasing, as well as cross-zoning and flame detection is preferred.
Perform hydraulic calculations and work with outside resources to incorporate special hazard systems.
Prepare comprehensive fire protection packages including fire suppression, fire alarm, smoke evacuation, and life safety.
Apply sound fire protection engineering principles to assist in troubleshooting and solving client related problems.
Resolve design related installation issues with field personnel.
Review contractor shop drawings, field inspections, and testing and commissioning reports.

Qualifications



Candidates must have a Bachelor's of Science in Fire Protection Engineering from an ABET accredited university or Master's degree in Fire Protection Engineering with a BS in a related engineering field from an ABET accredited university. Minimum 4 years related experience (completion of master's degree in fire protection engineering may be substituted for one year of experience). Successful candidates must have a Professional Engineering Licensure in Fire Protection Engineering through NCEES testing. Consulting experience, NICET certification, and Certified Fire Protection Specialist accreditation is preferred. Excellent written and verbal communication skills with strong analytical and problem solving skills are required. Working knowledge of appropriate design tools such as hydraulic calculation software, Microsoft Projects, Excel, and Word. Knowledge and application of performance based design and FDS modeling is a plus. Position requires an individual capable of successfully solving challenging problems requiring adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures or criteria."
